Amazon Shareholders Urge Bitcoin Investment to Combat Inflation and Enhance Value
Amazon shareholders have called on the company to invest a minimum of 5% of its reserves in Bitcoin (BTC) to counter inflation and increase shareholder returns. They cited the impressive performance of MicroStrategy, led by Michael Saylor.
Long-Term Value Maximization
The shareholder proposal, shared by the National Center for Public Policy Research (NCPPR), states that Amazon has an "obligation to maximize shareholder value over the long term." This can be achieved by diversifying its balance sheet to include investments in Bitcoin, as proposed by the shareholders.
Current Assets Mix Insufficient
At the end of Q3, Amazon possessed $585 billion in total assets, including $88 billion in cash, equivalents, and securities. However, the proposal argues that this mix does not adequately protect shareholder value against inflation.
MicroStrategy's Success
The Amazon shareholders also highlighted MicroStrategy's remarkable stock performance in 2024. MSTR shares have skyrocketed over 500%, outpacing Amazon's 49% gain during the same period. MSTR has also outperformed gold and the S&P 500 index.
Microsoft to Vote on Bitcoin Investment
The NCPPR has also submitted a similar proposal to Microsoft shareholders. The company's board has recommended shareholders reject the proposal, but Microsoft's shareholders will vote on it at their annual shareholder meeting. Earlier, Saylor presented the benefits of Bitcoin investment to Microsoft's board.
