Following the $230 million hack of WazirX cryptocurrency exchange, users have faced a barrage of phishing attacks exploiting the security breach.
On July 18, 2024, the attack compromised various assets including Shiba Inu, Pepe Coin, Polygon, and Ethereum. Despite the exchange's security measures, hackers exploited a vulnerability, leading to a comprehensive reimbursement plan for affected users.
CoinDCX CEO Sumit Gupta has issued a warning regarding fake emails claiming compensation from WazirX. These emails use official channels to deceive users into revealing sensitive information or clicking malicious links.
The fraudulent email acknowledges the security breach and promises reimbursement in the form of a new token, WZA, airdropped based on lost asset value. However, these emails are part of a phishing campaign capitalizing on the chaos caused by the hack.
Gupta emphasizes verifying sender email addresses and website links for authenticity and advises against succumbing to fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD).
WazirX has also acknowledged the phishing attempts, identifying scam bots impersonating official accounts and sharing fake links. The exchange urges users to be vigilant, use official channels, and double-check the usernames and verified badges of potential WazirX accounts.
Scam Sniffer has also warned against these phishing attempts, emphasizing the increased risk of such attacks following major hacks.
