Doge: The Meme Star Who Inspired a Cryptocurrency Phenomenon
With crossed front legs, an endearing tilted head, and piercing eyes, this was the global meme sensation known as "Doge." On May 24th, Kabosu, the real-life Shiba Inu behind the beloved meme, passed away peacefully at the age of 19, surrounded by her loving owner.
Kabosu's Journey: From Stray to Internet Icon
Kabosu was born in 2005 at a purebred dog breeding facility. As a young pup, she faced a bleak future as the facility went bankrupt. Along with other companion animals, she was sent to various animal shelters.
In 2008, her fate changed when Atsuko Sato, a kindergarten teacher, met Kabosu and adopted her into her family. Little did they know the impact this encounter would have not only on their lives but also on countless others around the world.
The Birth of Doge: An Internet Meme
In 2010, Atsuko shared a photo of Kabosu with a comical and prideful expression. The image quickly went viral, with internet users embracing her unique features and creating countless memes. "Doge" was born.
With her adorable appearance and cheeky expressions, Kabosu became a beloved internet celebrity.
Dogecoin: A Cryptocurrency Inspired by a Meme
On December 13, 2013, American programmer Billy Markus and Australian marketer Jackson Palmer created Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency inspired by Bitcoin. They chose Kabosu's image as the official logo.
Initially designed as a satire on the speculative frenzy surrounding Bitcoin, Dogecoin gained significant popularity during the 2021 bull market, surging to a peak of $0.7316 per coin. Its use for tipping on social media platforms further cemented its presence.
Elon Musk's tweets about his plans to take Dogecoin "to the moon" and his self-proclaimed role as the "Dogefather" propelled the cryptocurrency to even greater heights.
At its peak, Dogecoin's market capitalization reached $75 billion, solidifying its position as one of the top three cryptocurrencies.
Kabosu's Legacy: A Meme Craze that Continues
Alongside its iconic mascot, Dogecoin played a pivotal role in bringing cryptocurrencies into the mainstream. Its success sparked a trend in meme-inspired altcoins, including Shiba Inu Coin (SHIB) and Floki Coin (FLOKI). The rise of these coins highlighted the influence of internet culture on the cryptocurrency market.
With Kabosu's passing, the legacy of the Doge meme lives on. PEPE, a similar meme-based altcoin, recently surged over 1100% year-to-date, demonstrating the enduring strength of memecoins in the current cryptocurrency cycle.
