Supreme Court Rules Against Coinbase in Dogecoin Sweepstakes Dispute
The Supreme Court of the United States has ruled against crypto exchange Coinbase in a dispute over its Dogecoin (DOGE) sweepstakes rules.
Legal Proceedings
According to legal documents obtained by Cornell Law, the Supreme Court unanimously determined that the conflict between Coinbase's sweepstakes contract and user agreement must be adjudicated through the court system.
Justice Jackson's Statement
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson explained:
"Arbitration is a matter of contract and consent, and we have long held that disputes are subject to arbitration if, and only if, the parties actually agreed to arbitrate those disputes. Here, then, before either the delegation provision or the forum selection clause can be enforced, a court needs to decide what the parties have agreed to."
Sweepstakes Controversy
The dispute arose from Coinbase's 2021 Dogecoin sweepstakes, which allegedly contained conflicting rules compared to the exchange's user agreement.
User Agreement and Sweepstakes Rules
Coinbase's user agreement, which users must accept before creating an account, requires that disputes be resolved through arbitration. However, the DOGE sweepstakes rules stated that disputes must be handled through California's court system.
Class Action Lawsuit and Court Proceedings
A class action lawsuit was filed against Coinbase, alleging that the sweepstakes violated the law. Coinbase attempted to resolve the dispute through arbitration based on its user agreement, but a District Court denied the motion. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the District Court's decision.
Supreme Court Ruling
While the Supreme Court declined to comment on the Ninth Circuit's reasoning, it ruled that a court must ultimately determine the parties' agreement.
"Homing in on the conflict between the delegation clause in the first contract and the forum selection clause in the second, the question becomes whether the parties agreed to send the given dispute to arbitration. And that question must be answered by a court."
